In The Heart

The end of the Santa Fe Trail is marked by a monument placed by The Daughters of The American Revolution before New Mexico was granted statehood in 1912.

The trail was a commercial trade route from 1821 until the 1880’s. Started by a trader named William Bucknell it was the way west from Missouri and was traveled by as many as 5000 wagons annually bringing settlers and goods. The Santa Fe Plaza has been the commercial, social and political center of Santa Fe since c. 1610 when it was established by Don Pedro de Peralta. Today it is home of the largest Indian Art Market in the world every August.
